Solution Spotlight: Know When Pets Are Coming & Going with a Smart Monitoring System

The Challenge

We installed a smart system that paired Aqara door sensors, Reolink cameras, and Home Assistant to create an efficient, private, and data-secure solution.

1. Choosing the Right Devices:

   • Aqara Door Sensors: These sensors were selected for their Zigbee compatibility, ensuring all communication between devices remained local to the network. This design choice prioritized data privacy—a significant concern for many pet owners.

   • Reolink Cameras: Known for their ability to integrate seamlessly with local home automation platforms, Reolink cameras offered high-quality video recordings without relying on cloud storage.

   • Home Assistant: The robust automation capabilities of Home Assistant allowed us to link the sensors and cameras, creating a custom solution tailored to the homeowner’s needs.

2. Implementing the System:

   • Two pet doors were installed on the laundry room door: one configured for entry and the other for exit. Aqara door sensors were affixed to each flap to detect when a pet entered or exited.

   • An automation was configured so that when the "entry" sensor was triggered, the Reolink camera in the laundry room began recording. These recordings were stored on a local server, ensuring complete privacy and easy access to review footage.

3. Overcoming Unexpected Challenges:
   During the setup, we faced a unique challenge: determining the appropriate video recording length. We wanted to ensure each recording captured key behaviors—such as which cat entered the room and whether they were eating or using the litter box—without consuming excessive storage space on the local server. By analyzing pet behavior patterns and adjusting settings in Home Assistant, we fine-tuned the automation to strike the perfect balance between functionality and efficiency.

4. The Outcome:
   The system provided invaluable insights into the cats’ habits. The homeowner could identify who entered the room, who was eating when, and which cat was experiencing gastric distress. Armed with video evidence, they were able to provide their veterinarian with detailed information, expediting diagnosis and care.
